Glossary of Key Terms

Vignette
A time-based toll permit required for using Austrian motorways and expressways. Available as a physical adhesive sticker or a digital registration linked to a vehicle's registration plate.
ASFINAG
Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft. The Austrian state-owned company responsible for financing, planning, building, and operating the Austrian motorway and expressway network.
Digital Vignette (Digitale Vignette)
A vignette registered to a vehicle's registration plate in the ASFINAG database. No physical sticker is required. Enforcement is automatic via cameras. Can be purchased online at asfinag.at up to one year in advance.
Autobahn
Austrian motorway. Designated with the letter "A" followed by a number (e.g., A1, A13). Vignette required on all Autobahn sections unless a special toll applies.
Schnellstrasse
Austrian expressway. Designated with the letter "S" followed by a number (e.g., S1, S35). Vignette required on all Schnellstrasse sections.
GO-Box
The electronic toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight in Austria. These vehicles do not use the vignette system and must instead use the GO-Box distance-based toll.
Special Toll Road (Sondermaut)
A motorway section or tunnel that requires an additional toll payment beyond the standard vignette. Key examples include the Brenner (A13), Arlberg (A14), and Karawanken (A11) tunnels.
Trafik
Austrian tobacco shop. Also sells physical vignette stickers. Found in Austrian towns and cities.

Correct Placement

Physical vignette stickers must be affixed inside the windscreen, upper left corner (driver's perspective), or behind the rear-view mirror if heating element present. Must be visible from outside. Non-transferable.

Critical: Incorrect placement = invalid vignette. Sticker cannot be removed and reused.

Digital Vignette

The digital vignette is purchased at asfinag.at. Enter your registration plate exactly as on your documents. Select start date. No physical sticker needed. Enforcement is automatic via cameras.

Exceptions and Exclusions

  • Special toll roads: Brenner A13, Arlberg A14, Karawanken A11, Tauern A10 sections require extra payment.
  • Vehicles over 3.5t: use GO-Box system.
  • Invalid placement = invalid vignette.
  • Tampered stickers = invalid.
  • Wrong plate on digital = invalid.
  • Expired vignette = same penalty as no vignette.
  • Ordinary roads do not require a vignette.
  • Emergency vehicles are exempt.
